The Liam Flood Memorial Championship was explosive from start to finish. Being the penultimate event of this year’s open, and having a 15-minute clock, that was always likely to be the case.
In recent years this tournament has grown in stature and attracted some big names. Today was no exception.
Dara O’Kearney, David Lappin, Barny Boatman, Ari Engel and many others joined the merry throng, on this final day of what has been a hugely successful Irish Open.
But the blinds were going up quick — and by the time we got to the business end of the contest, they had all fallen by the wayside.
At the final table, the potential story was Natalie Bromley, who has recently been commentating for the BBC at her beloved Burnley Football Club.
She is also the founder of the charity, Hearts of Queens, which we have already promoted in our blog but are only too happy to do so again. Please check it out.
Unfortunately, Bromley fell in seventh place. but the story we got was no less heart-warming. When Alecsandru Petre Orban finally bested his last opponent, he was fittingly moved by the whole experience.
“This is my first trophy”, he said, “and I dedicate it to my mother, Elizabeth.
And that is a sentiment that Liam Flood himself, would have surely approved of.
