Dom Clementsson is covering the “Old Dogs” flight of the tournament, while Christoffer Karlén is following the “Young Pups”. Both blogs feature a segment called “The Bark,” where the live reporters ask the players certain questions related to the opposing competition.
The next person whom I forced to answer two short questions was the Netherlands’ Erwin Wiechers. Wiechers had two results at this year’s Irish Poker Open so far: a 40th-place finish in the €250 APAT Championship for €370, and a 24th-place finish in the €350 6-Max Championship for €1,360. Now, he’s among fellow Young Pups, trying to make it through to tomorrow’s Day 2.
Considering the Old Dogs are sitting at the nearby tables, I asked Wiechers what he’s looking forward to the most once he’s 50 years old. It was not an easy question for him; after thinking for a minute or two, he gave a very diplomatic answer: “I just want to enjoy life.” I took the liberty of elaborating on his answer: “Waking up late on a Sunday and watching Seinfeld reruns?” His face lit up; it sounded like a stellar idea.
The next thing I asked him was what his favorite dog breed was, and he answered without hesitation: Golden Retriever. “That’s not a cat, is it?” I glanced at Peggy Crawford, giving a playful nod to her earlier reply to the same question.
