It was a see-saw heads up battle, as befitted the two players who had contested the chip lead in the latter part of the day, but Kai Lehto finally bested Klemmens Roiter.

Roiter was very short stacked going into the final hand and it was almost inevitable that he would get his chips in the middle.

The board read — and with Lehto holding — a on the river completed his flush and brought him the title.

It wasn’t all plain sailing. With 5 runners left, Lehto was nursing the shortest stack at the table. But a series of quick double-ups saw him vault into the lead and he was there or thereabouts for the rest of the day.

Roiter already has a second place finish this week, along with a maximum bounty prize — and was a worthy adversary as you’d expect. He’ll no doubt be disappointed with another bridesmaid finish but the €67,000 he’ll receive as runner-up will go some way to healing the hurt.

Day 1 chip leader Ruslan Nazarenko rounded off the top three, taking home €48,100 for his troubles.

Lehto has previous at the Open: he took down the €1,110 PLO 8-Max here two years ago. But today’s score dwarfs the €38,805 he won on that occasion.
