Yesterday, there was clash between the old school and new school when poker legend John Duthie felt the need to admonish Swiss player Mike Koch regarding commenting on an opponent’s style of play while they were at the table and a hand was in progress. Stephen Kavanagh was seated beside Duthie, and backed him up.

The same row has just broken out here today. Kavanagh and Romanian youngster Alexandru Lupuleac were seated at the table, which includes start of day chip leader Antoine Vranken. Vranken opened and Lupuleac commented “Raising machine”.

Kavanagh felt this was inappropriate, and a dispute broke out. The floor was called and firmly put an end to it, making it clear that any further such commentary would be punished. Lupuleac seemed to accept he was mostly in the wrong.

While banter and craic at the table always make poker fun, the integrity of the game must be respected at all times, and perhaps this was a useful reminder of that for Lupuleac.

Whether that was anything to do with what happened next is debatable, but Kavanagh jammed, and got it through.

In the next hand Lupuleac jammed from middle position with for 135,000, and was looked up by Roel Van der Sanden.

Lupuleac was crushed, and was dead by the turn on the runout. Not a glance or word was exchanged between Kavanagh and Lupuleac as he left the table, but it was clear the Irishman was not displeased with the outcome of the hand.

Roel Van der Sanden – 670,000
Alexandru Lupuleac – 0
