The Main Event is back in action today with Day 1c of the €2.5 million guaranteed flagship tournament.
Day 1b of the €1,150 Irish Open Main Event yesterday brought another 709 entries into the headline €2.5 million guaranteed tournament at the Royal Dublin Society making a combined field of 1,176 entries so far, with three flights left to play.
In the lead, after 1B’s field dropped to 149, lies Lawrence Penfold with 796,000 chips. He’s narrowly ahead of Day 1A’s chip leader Massimiliano Cordeschi (773,000). Penfold went on a late-stage surge, helped in no small part by his cracking of James O’Connor’s aces to finish in front of near rivals Abel Pruchon and Fraser Bellamy.
Tom Waters celebrates huge stack
Day 1b’s field is nearly two dozen entries ahead of last year’s 1b so we are very much on track to set a new record. Rather excitingly, Luxon head honcho Tom Waters, who finished fourth in the 2023 Main Event, is currently sitting sixth in chips.

Tom will be spending most of today on child care duties in the nearby Herbert Park playground. It’s his turn to look after four-year-old Eddie while wife Charlie competes on Day 1c (and keen to outdo her hubby’s Day 1b 532,000 chip count.) Charlie (nee Godwin) is also a very accomplished player and was runner-up in last year’s record-breaking Hendon Mob Championship.
Meanwhile, Eddie also holds an Irish Open claim to fame. He can confidently say that he’s come to Dublin for every single Irish Open since he was born (and actually a bit before that too!) Definitely a record. Only 14 years to go and he can play it!
Luxon are our Official Payment Provider and sponsored the hugely successful opening event of the festival, the €1 million guaranteed, €1,150 Luxon Mystery Bounty. The event was won by Tudor Bartha for €110,700.
Other notables making it through Day 1B include PokerStars Eureka Cyprus champion and EPT finalist Leo Worthington-Leese (335,000), prior Irish Open Main Event winner Dan Wilson (290,000), EPT Prague champion Padraig O’Neill (224,000), recent EPT Prague finalist Conor O’Driscoll (391,000) and former professional footballer Rubin Okotie (118,000).
Day 7 highlights
Sadly last year’s amazing Main Event champion Simon Wilson was eliminated on Day 1b – we aren’t sure he’s going to be re-enter today. Here’s the Tower’s interview.
