The Irish Poker Open is growing bigger and bigger for every year. New players are traveling to Dublin to participate in the event for the very first time, while some contestants return to what has become more familiar ground.

One player who has returned after a successful week during the 2024 Irish Poker Open is James “Jim” Reid. He’s currently seated at Table 4 in the 6-Max and is on a mission to exceed what he achieved last year. That would indeed be an impressive feat; during his inaugural visit to the RDS in 2024, he finished 6th in the tournament for €7,980. That was Reid’s first-ever final table live, and he’s very fond of the 6-Max format:

“(Compared to full-ring) I think it’s more comradery; you feel like a more intimate group. It’s chatty and more friendly, and for me, I just like it a lot since I got the final table last year.”

Reid is looking to get a card rush at the table soon; he’s been on the wrong side of some flips and currently sits at 31,000 in chips, which will be roughly 16 Big Blinds when the players return after the dinner break. His table hasn’t been the softest, as Twitch poker icon Felix Schneiders was one of his table neighbors, schooling the well-dressed Reid in a couple of pots.

It’s a pleasure to have Reid visiting the Irish Poker Open all the way from Canada, even though he may have had some problems adapting to the culture. The other day, he was caught on picture dipping his sandwich in Guinness, something that Dara O’Kearny referred to as an abomination.

Reid’s trademark shot glass, where he keeps most of his live earnings.

When asked if there’s anything else that needs to be highlighted from the tournament so far, Reid said he was a little disappointed he didn’t get more air time in front of the cameras:

“I was hoping I would be able to eat my peanut butter and jelly sandwich on stream, but the cameras never showed up.”

This reporter asked Reid jokingly if he was going to have another PB&J during the break. Slowly, the Canuck reached into his pocket and pulled out a sandwich, neatly protected in a plastic bag. Enjoy your dinner, Reid!
