When it came to the turn of Beavis and Butthead (Laura Cornelius and Dana Immanuel) vs. Cheese on Toast (Brian Ó hÉideáin and Mad Harper), the inexperience of the field had extended Round 1 overlong, and Phil was forced to improvise:
“We are struggling for time. Life is a practise. We’re going to change the rules very very slightly – instead of two teams taking each other on, there will be up to four teams at once! First to three points wins!” Thus team French Lovers entered the fray.
Up to the throwing area came Mad Harper, whose first throw scored 1. There followed one each for the other two teams, and a sudden second for French Lovers.
“Laura thinks this is bowling!” mocked Phil as B and B failed again and again to hit the hole. Or the board. They “hit the pillar” (not a euphemism, something all the teams have so far struggled with) plenty, though. Cheese on toast were warming up – a second hit! But it was French Lovers who got to the magic number and stole victory. Brian looked as if he was going off to write a strongly-worded letter to the cornhole bosses indicating that by the original rules, one of the two teams initially signed up would have qualified for round two, and also that he was just warming up.
